Salmonella Linked to Meal Replacement Shake

Salmonella Linked To Meal Replacement Shake
State health and agriculture officials are investigating an outbreak of foodborne illness associated with eating “Garden of Life Organic Shake & Meal Replacement” in Minnesota and several other states.

Several matching cases of the salmonella Virchow strain have been reported by residents who also ate the supplement in states such as Wisconsin, Tennessee, Oregon, New Jersey, New Mexico and Utah, officials said. Neither was hospitalized, and both have recovered. The company also said it is “voluntarily withdrawing a limited quantity of its Raw Meal Organic Shake & Meal Chocolate, Original, Vanilla and Vanilla Chai” since these products may likely have the Salmonella Virchow pathogen.

Product testing is underway in Minnesota where one of the case patients ate vanilla flavored product and one ate chocolate flavored product.

Please consult your health care provider for more information with specific questions about treatment of salmonellosis.
The Minnesota officials report most of the other states have reported single cases. However, to be on the safe side, always consult with a health care professional for a proper diagnosis.

If anyone has already consumed Garden of Life Raw Meal products, and is now experiencing symptoms such as stomach pain and discomfort, nausea, dehydration, fever, vomiting and bloody diarrhea, they should immediately contact a medical practitioner, because they might have become infected with Salmonella. The two cases in Minnesota purchased the items at separate places. Invasive infections (for example, blood stream infections, meningitis) occasionally occur. Raw Meal products are distributed throughout the United States and sold at better health food stores and natural foods grocers. The recalled products should not be consumed. Consumers who believe they have a Raw Meal product affected by this recall should look for the following lot codes prominently stamped on the underside of the plastic container. Symptoms typically begin 12 to 72 hours after exposure, but they can take up to a week to appear. None of the tests was positive for Salmonella, according to the company. Investigation has been taking places into the food supplement.
