How to Have Healthy HousePlants
Healthy HousePlant |
There are two things that should be considered when you have the desire to add to your houseplant collection. These are the plant itself and the nursery or shop where you plan to purchase this plant. You should not settle for the first plant you see. Be choosy and think about your purchase.
The first step to finding healthy houseplants is to find a reputable dealer or nursery. Some people have good luck with bargain plants. This is especially true if the store has a large turn-over of plants and they do not just sit and deteriorate from lack of proper care. However, if you are in need of advice and information about the care of your new plant, a nursery or florist may be your best bet. What you want to look for are plants that are well taken care of, where ever that might be.
Once you decide where you would like to purchase your new houseplant, take a look at the plants in the store. Do all of them seem healthy? If they look to be in good shape, this indicates that they are being taken care of properly. A large amount of dead leaves or soil that is very dry might let you know you want to go somewhere else to select your new plant.
When you are making your plant choice, look at the plant you are considering. Does it look healthy? Can you see any leaf damage or evidence of pests? Is the shape uniform? A lopsided plant can indicate that there have been several leaves and stems removed from one section of the plant. Are the leaves a consistent shape? Do you see any new growth? All of these questions should be answered"yes" to be sure you are getting a healthy houseplant.
You should also check to see if there are any roots growing out of the drain holes in the bottom of the container. If there are, this is an indication that the plant is potbound and has been in the same pot for too long. The roots are not being allowed to expand and this could stunt the growth of the plant. If you do not want to re-pot the plant when you get it home, you should choose another plant to purchase.
Think about where you will be putting this plant in your home. You should be sure to choose a plant that is the appropriate size. If you have a large area to fill up, do not choose a small plant and wait for it to grow into the space. This could take months or even years. And, a larger plant that is well established will adapt to the new environment in your home better than a younger plant.
Houseplants can make a home seem much more comfortable. They are pleasing to the eye and an easy accessory to add to any décor. Hopefully, these tips will help you have a better chance of purchasing a healthy houseplant that you and your family can enjoy for many years to come.
