Stop Writing For Free
There are many people who believe that writing is not a job. They think that since writing do not require any special skills (which is not exactly true) and it's not hard, expecting to be paid for it is unreasonable.
This is, obviously, not true. But unfortunately, it affects the job market. It leaves people thinking that writing is so easy that wanting to be paid for it is a silly whim. It's not unusual to see people offering writing jobs for pennies. Sometimes literally.
I'm writing about my experiences as a freelance writer on the Polish market, but I'm pretty sure it looks similar in the USA, too.
It's hard to get started as a freelance writer, because people have unreasonably high expectations and often offer very little money. Some newbie writers decide to take those badly paid offers or even the free offers, because they want to gain "experience" and hope to get paid better one day. But they're only perpetuating the vicious circle - now those people will continue offering little money for writing jobs, because they know that somebody's going to do those jobs anyway.
